The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the Dome of Volterra. Even if you are not sure that this building was the first cathedral town, although in each case the building existed as early as the ninth century. The cathedral was rebuilt following the violent earthquake of 1117, and larger during the second half of the thirteenth century. It is represented in the transept a decoration of classic taste, with some adjoining lunettes ornate with the technique dell'ornato flattened taste preromanico, lozenges and terraces that welcomed the centre ceramic basins. The portal marble is composed of material acquired from the Roman Theater of Vallebona.
